JOB SUMMARY


The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Clinical Pharmacist Specialist is an essential part of the Level III NICU’s multidisciplinary team providing the highest level of neonatal care at UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center’s Dallas campus. The NICU Clinical Pharmacist Specialist’s responsibilities include:


Participation in NICU’s Multi-disciplinary Rounding, clinic discussion, IRB, and/or service-line meetings;


Yearly development of a cost-saving initiative, quality and/or operations process improvement with manager sponsor, MUE or drug class review with manager sponsor;


Yearly ACPE/non-ACPE presentation (rotating between ACPE/non-ACPE);


Individual CE in Area of Specialty (6 hours);


P&T or Subcommittee Attendance (50% attendance requirement);


Precept two (2) learners (pharmacy student or resident); and


Annual submission of research project on Project Submission Template (Due April 1st).


Additional clinical pharmacist specialist responsibilities include:


Manages clinical activities, priorities, and problems, pharmacist staffing and workloads.


Provides status report to pharmacy management effectively communicating issues, concerns, and suggestions as appropriate.


Manages and develops clinical initiatives and determines therapeutic alternatives when drug shortages are identified and communicates with medical staff leadership and key stakeholders.


Assists with budget preparation and daily financial activity specifically in relation to high cost drugs.


Assists with budget preparation and daily financial activity specifically in relation to high cost drugs.


Assists the Director and Assistant Vice President of Pharmacy with meeting administrative goals and objectives.


The Neonatal ICU Clinical Pharmacist Specialist is an exempt (salaried) position. This position will be scheduled primarily day shifts Monday to Friday.


EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE


Must meet one of the following requirements:

Completion of both PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program; OR


Completion of PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program and 5 years as a pharmacist in a progressive clinical practice in NICU; OR


8 years as a pharmacist in a progressive clinical practice in NICU.


Bachelor of Science (BS) degree or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy is required.


Licensed Pharmacist by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) and current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.


BPS board certification is preferred.


Working knowledge of computers and data-entry skills are essential. Ability to communicate clearly in English (speaking, reading, and writing) is required. Good general health and a strong ability to cope with stress in a faced-paced environment is a must. Position requires moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs.), reaching, bending, crouching, etc. (OSHA Category III).
