Job Description

The Clinical Informatics Nurse assumes responsibility for enhancing the practice of medicine and to benefit the patient by extending and improving the health care delivered. Supports staff within the organization on the use of the electronic health record and other electronic programs.


  1. Is available during operating hours to assist staff members in problem-solving computer issues
  2. Assists IT in the set-up of a username and initial passwords for a new staff member in the needed electronic systems and provides assistance when current credentials do not work
  3. Trains new providers and staff members on the current electronic systems. Suggests workflow changes and implements these changes
  4. Participates in upgrading electronic systems: 1) write and submits enhancements for changes 2) participates in the development and adaptation of clinical documentation 3) participates in local, regional, and national meetings (travel is an expectation) 4) educates staff in monthly staff meetings
  5. Participates and obtaining data for quality measures from different electronic systems. Builds reports as requested for quality purposes
  6. Utilize good language skills in communication with providers, staff, patients and when networking
  7. Writing and typing skills for accurate documentation
  8. Contacts include but are not limited to co-workers, medical staff, volunteers, patients, representatives from other organizations, and the public (in person and on the telephone).
  9. Attends all required meetings and in-services
  10. Other job duties as assigned

Floor Nurse

  1. Covers for floor nurses as needed to ensure appropriate staffing during vacancies
  2. Consistently utilizes methods and knowledge to accurately assess all patient systems
  3. Identifies appropriate nursing diagnosis to develop a plan of care that is individualized, timely, and patient-centered
  4. Implements nursing actions safely and consistently with the plan of care
  5. Incorporates patient and family teaching into the assessment and care of each patient. Evaluates outcomes of patient care and teaching
  6. Assessment, planning, intervention, including teaching and evaluation of patient care are reflected by completed and accurate documentation
  7. Acts as liaison between providers, the care team, the patient, and the family. Serves as a patient advocate, as necessary
  8. Demonstrates the ability to use critical thinking skills in prioritization, delegation, decision making, and practicing safety


  1. Associates degree in Nursing or equivalent experience required
  2. Current RN Iowa license required (or LPN License with Clinical Informatics experience)
  3. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferred, but not required
  4. Two years’ previous experience in a similar position within a health center or related field required
  5. Skilled in MS Office software, professional written and verbal communication, and decision making
  6. Successful completion of BCLS and Mandatory Reporter
  7. Willingness to complete on-going electronic Medical Record certifications as assigned.
